Bhakhra Nangal Project

The Bhakra Dam, located in Bilaspur, Himachal Pradesh, India, is a significant engineering and hydroelectric project with multiple purposes. Here are some key points about the Bhakra Dam:

  1. Location: The Bhakra Dam is situated on the Sutlej River in northern India.
  2. Height: It is India’s tallest concrete gravity dam, standing at a height of 225 meters.
  3. Length: The dam is 518.25 meters long and 9.1 meters wide.
  4. Reservoir: The dam creates a reservoir known as the “Gobind Sagar,” which can store up to 9.34 billion cubic meters of water. This reservoir covers an area of 168.35 square kilometers.

Type of Dam – Concrete Straight Gravity

Three States Punjab, Haryana ,Rajasthan own it. It is a venture of all three states. It is also India’s biggest multipurpose projects. Talking about its construction ,it’s a gravity dam. Length of this dam is nearly 518 meter. Height is 225.5 mtrs. This Dam is built on River Sutlej. It can store nearly 7551 Million cum( 6.122 million acre ft) of water. Irrigation wise its most beneficial as it irrigates a total of 14.8 Lacs hectare. Capacity wise it is counted by two bank right and left bank. Right bank power house 785 MW and Left Bank power house 612 MW.

2.) Chambal Project

This project was jointly built by two states Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. It was started in year 1952-54. It was completed in three stages. In first stage of the project Gandhisagar Dam , its power house and Kota barrage were complted. In second stage Rana Pratap Sagar Dam was constructed with a power house of 172 MW and in the last stage Jawahar Sagar Dam with a power house of 99 MW was constructed. It generates nearly 386 MW.

3.) Damodar Valley Project

It has been built by two states West Bengal and Jharkhand. This Project is administered by Damodar Valley Corporation Which was established in 1948. Basic aim of Government to bring this project was for irrigation, Flood control during monsoon and power generation for both West Bengal and Jharkhand.

4.) Hirakud Project

Jawaharlal Nehru’s description of dams as the “temple of Modern India” .The construction of dams like Hirakud has indeed played a crucial role in India’s post-independence development. Here are some points about the importance of Hirakud Dam in general:

Flood Control: One of the primary purposes of Hirakud Dam was to control the frequent floods in the Mahanadi delta.
Irrigation: Dams like Hirakud also provide irrigation water to a large agricultural area.

Hirakud dam lies in Orissa . Hirakud Dam is not only India but world longest dam. It is a staggering 4801.2 mtrs in long. It has been built over river Mahanadi.

4.) Nagarjuna Sagar Project

It was inaugurated on 10th Dec 1955 by Late Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru prime minister of India. It is situated in Andra Pradesh. It is the largest and the highest masonry Dam in the world. Nagarjuna Sagar Dam has been built on river Krishna. It is near Nandikonda Village of Nalagonda district of Andra Pradesh.

5.) Konya Project

It lies in Maharashtra. It has been built on river Konya by the Maharashtra. It was started in 1956 and opened in 1964. Dam height is around 208 feet. It is a complex project with four dams as the name suggest KONYA. It has a capacity of 1920MW.
