Before working as a headhunter, Daniel Huynh spent a decade coaching competitive cheerleading and dance at his alma mater. But a serious knee injury forced him to reconsider his career journey – and after several HR and recruitment courses, he discovered it was a way to continue fulfilling his passion for making a difference in the lives of young people. Today, Huynh is doing so as the University Recruitment Program Manager at cryptocurrency company Coinbase.
“Working in the university’s placement and training programs has enabled me to support students with opportunities to gain knowledge and experience early in their careers,” he says.
In 2018, Huynh was introduced to Coinbase, about a year after his first full-time job after university. “I longed for a role where I could make a bigger impact,” he recalls. While applying to various jobs, he had the opportunity to get an interview with Coinbase, and he’s been there ever since.
Here, Huynh shares what he looks for in engineering candidates, why he loves Coinbase’s startup culture and commitment to remote work, and how he spends his free time (hint: that includes reality TV).
How did you know Coinbase would be right for you?
After completing my interviews, I knew that Coinbase would be a perfect fit for two reasons. First, all of the interviewees were very welcoming. Secondly, when I asked them why they chose to join Coinbase, their answers were very honest. That excitement built in me and I knew I needed to be on this rocket ship.
What is your responsibility as the University’s Career Program Manager?
Oversee a small but strong team of two excellent recruiters, and together we ensure that our internship program brings high performing talent to Coinbase. Like many internships, we provide students with on-the-job learning and development. Most importantly, we are offering an opportunity to return to Coinbase full time and become future leaders in this space.
The behind-the-scenes work with our hiring partners to ensure we offer the best internship program is challenging at times, but in the end, it’s rewarding to see the impact my team has had on not only Coinbase, but also the students.
What do you look for in engineering candidates early in their careers?
We are looking for people who are curious about cryptocurrency. They may not be well versed in what Coinbase does, but they understand the core fundamentals of our identity as a company, as well as our mission and values. We want candidates who are passionate about making a global impact, no matter how big or small the task.
Pretend you’re talking to a potential candidate at a recruitment event. How do you sell work on Coinbase? Why is now a particularly exciting time to join the company?
If you are someone who enjoys working on the latest technology, not only is Coinbase the leading cryptocurrency exchange, but we are also at the forefront of blockchain technology and Web3. our latest launches, a base And Summer Onchin, are just two examples of exciting projects you can work on. In addition, you will have the opportunity to innovate and contribute to shaping the future of finance.
Why is Coinbase an ideal place for engineers to start their careers?
Someone who is at the very beginning of their engineering career will have plenty of opportunities to work on projects that have real-world impact. Although Coinbase has grown and become a public company, it still maintains aspects of a startup where engineers can work in a dynamic and collaborative environment.
What is your company’s favorite feature or feature and why?
I love when candidates ask me this question. The ability to work remotely certainly provided a great work-life balance. The time saved commuting has given me more time to do household chores during the week, so I have more fun and relaxing time over the weekend. Coinbase also offers opportunities for employees to network either at local hosted events or off team sites, and we have a semi-annual stipend to use for meetings.
How do you like to spend your time outside of work?
I like to spend my time with family and friends, cook, and travel. Currently, I’m learning to cook different family recipes, which is scary because most of my family members don’t have actual instructions. Instead, they monitor every measurement. It was definitely a learning experience full of trial and error.
What are you currently reading, watching and/or listening to?
My all-time guilty pleasure is reality TV. I totally like any show on the Bravo network. I also enjoy watching documentaries and movies based on or inspired by true stories. One of the last movies I saw was Penny bubblewhich was a great balance of comedy and storytelling about Beanie Babies and how they became so popular in the 1990s and early 2000s.
