The electrical engineer is the most popular job at ZipRecruiter at the moment. In fact, out of millions of job searches per day, the top five searches in the month of June were for various jobs in the electrical engineering field.
Senior positions have ranged from electrical service technicians to roles that require a PE license (the highest level of competency achievable in this field). On one end of the spectrum, there is a glut of job seekers looking for new opportunities in the highly specialized field of electrical engineering, and on the other side, there are large numbers of skilled workers looking for construction-related jobs as electricians.
More job seekers, more jobs
It is important to note that this high volume of searches does not necessarily mean that more workers are entering the labor market. Our data indicates that labor shortages persist, especially in medium-sized urban areas. Since these workers are in high demand and low supply, it is likely that most of these job seekers are already employed and looking to move up to higher paying jobs.
Using ZipRecruiter’s Opportunity Index—which compares the number of jobs available to job candidates—we found that demand for electrical and electrical engineering skills still far outstrips supply.
In the month of June, there were four electrical engineer jobs available for every job seeker and five electrician jobs available for every job seeker. By comparison, the overall opportunity index in June for each US job was 1.9, less than half of what it was for each of these jobs.
So we know electrical and electrical engineers are looking for the next best job. We also know that employers need their skills in a bad way. But where are the workers and where are the jobs?
Jobs are where the talent is not
The lack of worker mobility hurts many industries. the people Just don’t move As much as they are used to. In the field of engineering, we see a stark divide between where job seekers are located and what jobs are available. Using the Opportunity Index, we found that most talent is looking for a new job in the least demanding locations.
The New York metro area had the most electrical engineer jobs available this June, but it also had the most candidates. With roughly one chance per applicant, New York is still a market for job seekers, but it can’t be compared to some other major cities.
Detroit, Michigan was the metro with the greatest labor shortage of electrical engineers. A recovering city is adding thousands of jobs in the burgeoning field of autonomous driving. It recently took second place on our list of the best metro areas self-driving jobsThat is, it is a city that relies heavily on electrical engineering skills and robotics.
In nearby Ann Arbor, Michigan, there were nine electrical engineer positions for every applicant in the market, as of June 2018.
The job market for electricians showed a greater disconnect between talent and location. Again, the New York metro area had the most available electrician jobs, but it was one of the cities with the least opportunity for such jobs. In June, there was one electrician job for every five applicants.
However, in Lancaster and Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, there were a staggering 20 job openings for every electrician looking for a job in June. Cities all over Pennsylvania are It is experiencing a building boom And they need skilled electricians to operate the lights.
This data sends a clear message to employers who need electrical and electrical engineers: Companies need to step up their game when it comes to enticing talent to relocate. It is also a signal to skilled workers that advancement in their career may depend on their willingness to move.
